Thiess appointed Nacap to construct the Project Magnet Slurry and Return Water Pipeline from Iron Duke Minesite to the OneSteel Pellet Plant, in Whyalla, South Australia. Project Magnet consisted of construction and testing of a 62 kilometre dual slurry and return water pipeline.
Nacap’s scope of work included an API-5L Grade X70 slurry pipeline, varying 4.8-8.2mm wall thickness DN200 (8”) and an API-5L Grade X42 water pipeline, 6.4mm wall thickness DN400 (16”). The pipelines were constructed side by side in a single common trench (1100mm wide), with one optic fibre cable running the full length of the pipeline and a second optic fibre cable running for 48.5 kilometres.
The optic fibre cables were laid during backfill operations above the smaller slurry pipeline while large quantities of zinc earthing ribbon were installed on the bottom of the trench. Two pipeline cross-overs were fabricated, hydrostatically tested, painted and installed at the two highest points on the pipeline route.
The project was completed on time and to project satisfaction.
